Dryden 2012 Summer Skies (download brochure & permission slip).
Programs are generally FREE with donations welcomed and/or requested to help cover the cost of special programming. Please make checks payable to Cornell Cooperative Extension, Dryden RYS Donation in note section.
Programs For Ages 9- 14.
Enrollment 'first come, first serve' basis.
Donations for the below programs help to support Dryden Youth Services. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay.
Rocketry $ 30 Donation. Varna Community Center - 943 Dryden Rd. (NY RTE. 366) July 2nd - July 4th from 9-12. Did you ever wonder how a rocket works? Come join us and build a rocket and then launch it on our last day. What could be cooler!
Wilderness Alive - $ 30 Donation. 4-H Acres - 418 Lower Creek Rd. July 9th - 12th (M-Th) from 9 AM- 3PM. Please meet behind Kiwanis Hall. Come learn about edible plants, primitive cooking, shelter building, nature awareness and more during this exciting program of fundamental earth skills. Please bring a lunch, water and dress for the weather in clothes that can get wet and dirty.
Games and Challenges - $ 30 Donation. Dryden Lake - Please meet at the small pavillion. July 23rd - 26th (M- Th) from 9am - 3pm. Back by popular demand. Come wear yourself out at this exciting Summer Skies program. Participants can look forward to all kinds of fun active group challenges and games, such as ultimate Frisbee, letterboxing and more! Please bring a lunch, water and dress to get active and possibly dirty.
Environmental Explorers - $ 30 Donation. Dryden Lake - Please meet at the small pavillion. August 6th - 9th (M - Th) from 9am - 3pm. Join us as we explore local environments as we search for animals, learn about birds and have fun in the great outdoors. On Tuesday the 7th students should be dropped of and picked up at the Ithaca Farmers Market where we will participate in the Floating Classroom. Please bring a lunch, water and dress for the weather in clothes that can get wet and dirty.
Programs For Middle and High Schoolers
Finger Lakes National Forest Hiking Trip - Aug 13th - Aug 15th. $100 Donation. Drop off and pickup for this adventure will be at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Ithaca. (615 Willow Ave.) We will meet at 9am on Monday. Students will be back at CCE at 11am on Wednesday. PLEASE NOTE: There is a mandatory meeting on Thursday August 9th for participants and their guardians from 6-8pm. We will go over gear, safety concerns and answer any questions. If you have a tent that you are willing to share please bring it to this meeting.
Primitive Pursuits - $ 30 Donation. Hammond Hill - August 20th - Aug. 23rd. (M- Th) 9am - 3pm. (Please meet at the Hammond Hill Parking area on Hammond Hill Rd. (off of Irish Settlement Rd.) next to Camp Earth Connections) Learn ancestral survival skills such as friction fires, shelter building , native crafts, tracking, nature awareness & more! Please bring a lunch, water and dress for the weather in clothes that can get wet and dirty.
FEE BASED PROGRAMMING
As our funding sources have been cut back in recent years Rural Youth Services is offering 1 fee-based program this summer. This income will help support year round programming. Dave Hall will help lead the below programming along with other RYS staff.
Homesteading & The Lost Arts - July 30-August 2 (M-Th)9am - 4pm; $200-$275 (sliding scale) Ages 10-16
Spend a few days learning some traditional lost homesteading arts like barn style building, gardening, open fire cooking, weaving, drum making, chicken lore and more! This program will also take place from Aug. 20-23 (Dave will not be an instructor that particular week, though there will be cool people there instead).
