2011 NY Ag Literacy Week
This year's New York Ag Literacy Week will be held March 21st-25th. More than 30 second grade teachers from throughout Tompkins County will be welcoming volunteers into their classrooms to read aloud a story that represents an area of New York agriculture, and then will lead the students in an educational activity. This year's event will spotlight the New York poultry industry with volunteers reading the book "Chicks and Chickens" by Gail Gibbons. The book covers the life of a chicken from embryo and egg to its life on the chicken farm. A copy of the book will be given to the library at each participating school. An electronic version of the book can be viewed online at the NY Ag in the Classroom website.
2nd grade teachers and volunteers who are interested in participating in NY Ag Literacy Week should contact Debbie Teeter at (607) 272-2292 or dlt22@cornell.edu. Visit the New York State Ag in the Classroom website to learn more about statewide activities and to learn about agriculture-themed books that have been featured in other years.
