Family Development Credential

The Family Development Credential (FDC) program provides frontline workers with the knowledge and skills they need to coach families to set and reach their own goals for healthy self-reliance in their communities. Coaches and clients use the Family Development Plan to focus their sessions on reaching the client's goals. The interagency FDC program is available in communities across the state and country to frontline workers from public, private and non-profit service systems (e.g., home visitors, case managers, family resource center workers, community health workers).

FDC can be an alternative to a college degree or a supplement to formal education in social work, human development and related fields. The curriculum is designed by Cornell University, endorsed by NYS, and nationally recognized. FDC is an integrated learning experience involving classroom and field service components. The intention is to move participants and their organizations towards an empowerment approach to human and organizational relationships emphasizing strengths, prevention, collaboration and self-determination.

The 10 classroom modules incorporate 90 hours of interactive learning with participants from different organizations. Field advisors assist workers in exploring principles, testing skills, demonstrating competencies, and completing the portfolio required for credentialing.
