Congo Square Market

Come on down! Mark your calendar! Invite your friends! The Congo Square Market at the Southside Community Center is open from 4:00-8:00pm on Friday evenings from June through mid-September.  The Market features a weekly fruit and vegetable stall with seasonal local produce and other produce that is in high demand in the community.  Other local vendors offer prepared foods and handmade crafts, and live music or DJs every week. All Welcome!

About Congo Square

CONGO SQUARE MARKET is a real place in New Orleans, first used by Houma Native Americans and later by slaves in the region as a place to enjoy one day of freedom. For African people, it was a place to maintain a connection to their true status as free people of Africa. Native Americans as well as Europeans often joined in the celebration. Music, abolitionist organizations, food, and dance all were intertwined to make this one day a week festival.  The aim of this Market is to recreate that historical gathering in the Southside Community, with its purpose being:
1.   to build a stronger and more self-reliant local community,
2.   to develop Southside's economic base, and
3.   to encourage community and personal health.

The Market is a collaboration between Southside Community Center, Ithaca Youth Bureau's Paul Scheurs Memorial Program,  Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension's Whole Community Project, and the Youth Farm Project. Jhakeem Haltom, a staff member of the Paul Scheurs Program, is the market founder and manager.
