Fighting Hydrilla: Impacts and Choices

This free, public information session will cover issues surrounding the recent identification of the invasive aquatic weed Hydrilla verticillata in Cayuga Inlet, and the methods proposed for its control.  Presentation will include: general information on Hydrilla; the context of when, where and how it was found in Cayuga Lake;  how quickly it may spread and the potential environmental impacts; an overview and discussion of the control methods available; and the recent formation, goals and process of the Cayuga Inlet Task Force.  A question-and-answer period will follow.

Presenters will include:  Roxy Johnston, City of Ithaca Watershed Coordinator; Lars Anderson, Plant Physiologist with USDA-Ag Research Service, specializing in Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research (via remote connection); Holly Menninger, Coordinator of the NY Invasive Species Research Institute at Cornell University. Facilitated by: Linda Wagenet of the Tompkins County Water Resources Council, and Sharon Anderson, Environment Program Leader at CCE-Tompkins.

The public is invited to attend, ask questions and share concerns.  To learn more about Hydrilla verticillata, visit our web pages under invasive species, and our Library of Hydrilla Resources on this site.
