One Step at a Time

Walking is a great low-cost way to get around, and many people also walk for fun and to stay healthy. Getting into a walking habit can also be a way to meet new people and get to know the area. Check out the groups and sites below to get walking ideas and meet up with other local walkers.

Lifelong
The mission of Lifelong is to enhance the lives of older adults in Tompkins County through health and wellness, learning, exercise, recreation, travel, life planning and volunteer programs. Check out Lifelong's Travel Program and Lifelong’s Community Walk schedule online, or call 607-273-1511.

GIAC
The Senior program of Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) goes walking every other week either at Cass Park or the Mall, depending on the weather. For more information, contact Kris Ebert at GIAC at 607-272-3622.

Cayuga Trails Club
This volunteer organization seeks to explore, enjoy, and preserve our natural areas. Members receive discounts on hiking gear, access to member resources and the members list, and the opportunity to have fun and help maintain the longest hiking trail in NY state. Email: info@cayugatrailsclub.org.

The Shops at Ithaca Mall
Ithaca Mall offers an environment where you may join others for beneficial walking. The mall opens every day at 7:00 AM and always provides a comfortable climate. You can keep track of your mileage with the black floor tiles that circle around the building and measure approximately 3/4 of a mile per lap. A free blood pressure machine is located near the Regal Theater for your convenience.

Cayuga Nature Center
Visitors to Cayuga Nature Center can explore the wonders of the natural world first hand.  CNC has over five miles of trails and a lodge filled with indoor exhibits including a kids' activity room; open from dawn to dusk.
