Try 'One New Trip'!

Transportation habits tend to be hard to change, but it's not all or nothing. Try one new trip a new way! Walk or bicycle to a meeting or appointment for a change, or curb your car and try the bus for a day.

Mix and Match Ways of Getting Around

Bike and Bus
All of TCAT's buses are equipped to carry up to two bicycles. Use the bus to get up hills and/or cover part of your trip, then use your bicycle to cover the rest, for "door to door" transportation.

Bus to a carshare car or truck
Ithaca Carshare might come in handy, even if you don't live downtown or near one of their vehicles. As a member, you could take a bus (or bicycle) to one of their cars or trucks, drive wherever you want, then return it and catch the bus home.

Car and Bicycle
Add a bicycle rack to your car, and you can make part of your trip by bicycle, adding health benefits to your transportation and possibly making it easier to park.

Curb your car early
Consider parking sooner, a bit farther from your final destination. You could save on gas, waste less time searching for parking, and get a little exercise if you take part of your trip by walking.

Park and Ride
Consider walking, bicycling or driving to a Park & Ride then switching to a bus, vanpool or carpool for the rest of your trip.

If you're having trouble affording or finding rides, are an older adult, a person with disability, or a veteran, see our Help with Rides page for resources that might help.

Bangs Ambulance also provides non-emergency transportation services-but note that they may not be covered by insurance

Exploring new options

Take charge of your transportation by comparing your options, reconsidering familiar options, or some you may be less familiar with:

  • Ridesharing

    Ridesharing is another word for carpooling or sharing a ride--something more people are doing more often to save on the costs and hassle of transportation.

    BEST IF YOU are looking for rides and/or riders to share transportation to or from work, errands, events or shuttling kids around. Ridesharing can save money in a taxi or Ithaca Carshare car too!

  • Vanpooling

    Vanpooling is a new service for groups of 5-17 people who live and/or work near each other and agree to ride together most days, paying by the month. Our local vanpool provider, VPSI provides the vans and contracts.
    BEST IF YOU     take the same trip most days, live or work near others who want to vanpool, and want to save over the cost of driving.

  • Ithaca Carshare

    Ithaca Carshare members can reserve, use and pay for Ithaca Carshare vehicles, including a truck, by the hour, potentially saving thousands of dollars over the cost of their own car.
    BEST IF YOU:

    1. Want access to a car for less cost and hassle than owning your own
    2. Have a license but use taxis a lot
    3. Can walk, bicycle or otherwise get to an Ithaca Carshare car, or,
    4. Need occasional use of a truck

  • CityVan

    Offers rides by reservation during weekdays, between Enfield and Newfield and Ithaca. Riders must call in to reserve a low-cost seat. BEST IF YOU travel between downtown Ithaca and Enfield or Newfield, the first two pilot project areas.
