What's Happening Locally?

  • 10.25  Tompkins Workforce New York holds monthly green jobs panels featuring speakers from local green businesses and non-profits.  For more information contact Jackie at Jacquelyn.Mouillesseaux-Grube@labor.state.ny.us or call 272-7570 ext 118.
  • 5.28Tompkins Cortland Community College's Business Training Program has begun a Green Energy Technology Program for the fall of 2010. They will offer courses and workshops in 3 new categories: Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and Green Construction.
  • 2.10Tompkins Cortland Community College has teamed up with Alfred State College, five other community colleges, and the Association of Builders and Contractors, to form SUNYGREENSNY. This consortium is committed to spreading clean energy technology across New York and has received a $2 million grant from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to develop and expand clean energy technology training.   • 1.10– The New York State Department of Labor has awarded $317,000 to Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County for the program A Different Shade of Green. This job-training program will give 120 low-income, unemployed veterans ages 18-65, the necessary skills to seek employment in environmentally sustainable fields. Read more...
  • 8.09Summer Jobs Build employed a workforce of Tompkins County youth and trained them to conduct low cost weatherization education and remediation for low-income families. Both participants and low income households gained economic benefits and long range potential for economic gains and energy savings.
  • 7.09TCAction trained 50 youth in door to door energy outreach. The youth learned about basic electricity reduction strategies and educated homeowners and linked homeowners to Weatherization remediation programs to help improve their home energy efficiency and cost savings.

What's Happening Nationally?

  • 9.09– The New York Senate passed the Green Jobs/Green NY Bill. The program will be funded with revenue raised by the auction of carbon emission credits through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Read more...
  • 5.09– Washington State passes "The Act", launching statewide energy efficiency programs. The Act will invest $14.5 million of federal stimulus money to weatherizing and retrofitting 20,000 homes and buildings each year over the next five years. Read more...
  • 7.08– Massachusetts passes the Massachusetts Green Jobs Act and creates the Massachusetts Clean Energy Technology Center. The Green Jobs Act provides grant money to stimulate clean energy companies, to create green jobs and provide job training programs. The Center works to stimulate job creation in the clean energy sector, promote workforce training, and conduct market research to identify barriers to the clean energy industry and job training needs. Read more...
