North South geologic section with approximate location of Tompkins County, Salina Salt beds, Lake Ontario, and NY/PA border.  Marcellus shale sits just above the blue layer indicated, which is the Onondaga Limestone.  Utica Shale is much deeper and is approximately shown (both rock layers are too thin to be shown with their own color/designation).
