Nut and Fruit Tree Culture: NYNGA English Walnut Tour Saturday, August 15, 2026 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Carl Albers homestead planting in Bath, NY, which also hosts a significant trial for the NY Nut Growers Association English Walnut Project, has grafted shagbark and shellbark hickories, apples, pears, plums, black locusts, and a vegetable garden. Carl is doing his best to foster early nut production through organic fertilization and other options for regenerative nut tree culture. You will learn about soil fertility, ways to improve soil drainage, and a regenerative approach to growing nut trees.Carl Albers is the current Vice President of the NY Nut Growers Association and is providing leadership for the NYNGA English Walnut Project (EWP.) He has degrees in botany, and plant and soil science, and worked as a crop specialist for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County for thirty years. The main focus of the EWP is to collect and trial under NYS growing conditions a diverse mix of Juglans regia individuals, both existing cultivars and seedling trees, for local adaptation and nut quality. This first foray quantifies the differences in production expenses and profitability of the PES pilot farms compared to producers of a similar scale & type that utilize conventional farming practices across New York State. By identifying the outsized maintenance costs these farmers incur by farming in conservation-minded ways (thereby increasing ecosystem services), allows our research team to identify the Opportunity Cost of prioritizing management for things like soil health and water quality/quantity. This Opportunity Cost describes the combined unaccounted-for price of activities like: no-till field labor hours, or maintaining acreage as riparian buffers along streams instead of converting that into direct-production space.
