All About Paw-Paws

Paw Paws are large, tropical-tasting fruits with soft flesh and A flavor that's like a cross between mango and banana. They are native to the United States and will grow in zone 5 climates like upstate NY. In this zoom class you'll learn all about this fruit and will get tips about adding them into your own fruit landscape. 

Instructor Anya Osatuke will cover the following information about Paw Paws during this online class (Screen reader support enabled.):

  • Pawpaws as an undomesticated crop
  • Propagating paw paws from seed
  • Grafting and transplanting
  • Seedling care
  • Varieties in the patch
  • Pollination
  • Crop history and uses

About the Instructor: Anya Osatuke is the Western New York Small Fruits Extension Specialist working with Harvest New York and the New York State Berry Growers Association. For her Masters degree, Anya researched strawberries with Dr. Marvin Pritts at Cornell University. Anya grew up gardening and foraging and loves to discuss native and invasive edibles in the landscape.

Class Recording: All classes are recorded so if you cannot make the live class, you can watch the video however only participants who have registered in advance for the class will have access to the video recording which is sent 48 hours later to registrants. Register and pay below.

We are committed to making all the classes in our Horticulture Program financially accessible, so have moved to a pay-what-you-can model. Our classes are valued at $20. If you can afford to pay $20 or more, you are helping make these classes available to folks who cannot afford the full price. All registrants, regardless of payment level, will receive a video recording of the class.

Cornell Paw Paw Orchard Tour

Anya Osatuke will conduct a separate tour of the Cornell Paw Paw Orchard in Lansing on Saturday October 9 from 10:00am to 12:00 noon where you will be able to see pawpaws growing, taste ripe fruit, and ask questions. Folks can do one or the other or both. Some of the information will overlap but the zoom class can get into a lot more technical detail whereas the tour will be much more experiential with an opportunity to taste fruit and take some home.
