Beyond the Box Reentry Job Fair

  • Tuesday, March 24, 2020, 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM

The 2020 Beyond the Box Networking & Job Fair for individuals who are seeking employment and community reintegration after experiencing incarceration or criminal convictions will be held on Tuesday, March 24, from 10:00am to 2:30pm at the Hotel Ithaca, 222 S Cayuga Street in Ithaca, New York. Admission is free for job seekers, and for exhibitors who wish to meet candidates who are seeking employment and community reintegration after experiencing incarceration or criminal convictions.

The theme of this year’s fair is ‘Working Towards a Deeper Inclusivity’. The event again honors the memory of Gino Bush, a local activist who was committed to helping the formerly incarcerated.

Schedule:

This year’s event will consist of a morning session with keynote speech and employer presentations, a lunch for participating presenters and employers, an afternoon job fair, and a workshop for people in reentry. All offerings are offered free of charge.

  • From 9:00-11:15am, several employers from the community will share their efforts and commitment to being more equitable and inclusive in their offering of services, workforce recruitment and retention, and in managing their workplace environments not just for people impacted by the criminal justice system but to benefit all workers.
  • The keynote address at 9:15am will be given by Sue Mann, CEO of Sansu Rising, a training and consulting firm that specializes in addressing workplace bullying and toxic work environments. Mann’s speech will focus on how previous trauma impacts an individual’s ability to be effective at their job, and how we as colleagues, employers and leaders can support those who have experienced trauma in ways that will help them to flourish in the workplace.
  • From 11:20-11:50am, lunch for presenters and service providers will be served.
  • From 12:00-2:00pm, up to 40 local and regional employers will provide information for individuals who have been incarcerated or had criminal convictions and will discuss with them potential employment opportunities at their firms and how to apply. There is no charge to participate and businesses or nonprofits that wish to reserve a table and participate in the job fair should contact Taili Mugambee, URO Director at tm554@cornell.edu or (607) 272-2292.
  • From 2:00-3:30pm, a workshop will be offered for people in reentry to encourage and inspire their interest in entrepreneurship.Additional details will be available as the date nears.

This annual event is organized by Ultimate Reentry Opportunity (URO ), a community-initiated and community-supported program that works collaboratively to help formerly incarcerated women and men access the resources to successfully rejoin their local communities. The campaign is housed at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, which is also its fiscal sponsor.
