Learn about Trees and Pruning! Know your trees and how to care for them, including pruning of trees and shrubs in a 3 part series of classes offered by Cooperative Extension and the City of Ithaca Forestry Dept. Anyone who is interested in becoming a Citizen Pruner Volunteer for the City is encouraged to take these classes in preparation for volunteering in the summer. Classes are offered Monday evenings – April 15, 22 and 29, 7-8:30 PM at the Cooperative Extension office. Topics include: April 15 – Tree selection and planting care; April 22 – Training and pruning trees; April 29 – Pruning shrubs. There is a $7-15 sliding scale fee to attend individual classes. Sign up for all 3 for $20 total. Following the classroom instruction, there will be a hands-on pruning workshop on Monday, May 6, 5:30 -7:00 PM (for an additional $5). About the Citizen Pruner Volunteer Program:
Citizen Pruner Volunteers get LOTS of hands-on pruning practice helping to maintain street trees and shrubs in the City of Ithaca. After 4 training sessions at Cooperative Extension, volunteers work once a week from May to October and are free to come weekly or as time permits. Staff from Extension and the City are always on hand during work sessions to help guide volunteers in making pruning decisions.
