Winter Tree Walk Series
Sunday, April 4, 2:00 pm
Call for location.
For youth and adults (children must be accompanied by an adult guardian). Join Akiva Silver, tree raconteur extraordinaire, and kindle your own passion and appreciation of all things tree. If you want to learn your trees and be entertained, then this is the walk for you. This walk will cover native and invasive trees as well as their edible, medicinal and utilitarian uses.This is the first in a series of walks to be held on the first Sunday of each month. If you can't make this walk but want to stay in the loop "become a fan" on the Primitive Pursuits Face Book page or let us know that you would like to join our mailing list Cost: FREE but suggested donation of $5 per person is welcome (money used to replant American Chestnuts). Primitive Pursuits Spring Camp 2010 (April School Break)
Monday-Friday, April 5-9, 9:00am–3:00pm (Staff will be on site from 8:30am–3:30pm)
4-H Acres, on Lower Creek Road off Rt 13 North, Ithaca
For youth ages 6-14. At our Spring Camp, each day you will gather plants for food, tea, and tool-crafting, follow tracks to the animal world, hone fire skills at your base camp, and explore beautiful wild places. We emphasize mentoring through community building activities, wilderness survival challenges, games and mastering survival skills and knowledge of the natural world. Come join us! Cost: Choose from three options:
#1: Monday and Tuesday: $110 - $140 (self-determined sliding scale)
#2: Wednesday-Friday: $145-$195 (self-determined sliding scale)
#3: Monday-Friday: $205-$305 (self-determined sliding scale)

Parents Apart: Helping Children Cope With Separation and Divorce
2 Mondays, April 5 & 12, 6:00- 9:00 pm

Openings now are available for Parents Apart®, a six-hour workshop for parents who want to learn how to help their child(ren) cope during their separation and divorce. The workshop is taught by therapists and attorneys and focuses on how children react emotionally to their parents' divorce and/or separation, and what parents can do to help them adjust. Participants select either two 3-hour weeknight sessions (from 6-9 pm), or one Saturday session (from 9 am-4pm with a 1 hour break). Registration is confidential and parents of the same child(ren) are placed in different workshops. Citizen Pruner Volunteer Training Program
Learn about trees and shrubs in the urban environment and why pruning is important. Citizen Pruners are volunteers based in the City of Ithaca who work weekly to prune trees and shrubs on curb strips and in parks. To learn more about the program, come to the classes being offered free of charge to volunteers and the general public (no obligation to volunteer).

2010 Green Building Series: Green Building Theory & Reality

How well are our green buildings performing? Based on a collection of data-driven and anecdotal experiences, this presentation will look at how we’ve been doing with green building in the Tompkins County area—are our materials and methods achieving everything we expected of them? Aaron Dennis, timber framer, straw bale builder, and founder of Tugley Wood Timberframing, Brent Katzmann, green designer, contractor, and owner of Balance Studio, and Jon Harrod, Owner of Snug Planet, which conducts building performance assessments and upgrades will discuss what has worked, what hasn’t, and what they and others have learned from the past decade of green building. Presented by Tompkins County Cooperative Extension in partnership with the Ithaca Green Building Alliance, with support from the First Unitarian Church of Ithaca. Growing Fruit at Home Workshop

Growing fruit at home can be fun and provide your family with fresh, flavorful and nutritious food. This full day class covers the basics youll need to succeed with apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries.  It will also mention nut trees, currants and gooseberries. Sessions cover site selection and preparation, including soil testing and fertilizing; critter control and small scale irrigation; planting, pruning, pest control and other growing practices.  Optional lunch session on the nutritional value of fruit, and techniques for preserving the harvest.  Bring your own lunch.  Fee: $25/person or $40/couple. 10th Annual 4-H Rubber Duck Race & 5K Run
Sunday, April 25, 12:00 Noon-4:00 pm
Come watch 3400 bright yellow rubber ducks tumble over Cascadilla Falls then bob down the creek in a frantic and fabulous race to the 4-H Education Center on Willow Avenue. A 5K foot race starts at Noon. Wonderful prizes are given for both the 4-H Duck Race and 5K. Duck chances are $5/duck or a flock of 5 for $20. 5K pre-registration is $10 (first 50 registered receive a t-shirt) and $20 on the day of the race.
