Mary Squyres' garden is a garden for gardeners--filled with interesting and unusual plant specimens; many of which are native plants. It features several shrub and perennial beds, some centered on a stone patio by the house, others forming borders between the lawn and woods. One garden features azaleas, mountain laurels and exotic arisaemas; another includes native Canada lilies, starry false Solomon's seal, and primroses.
Meandering paths take you through the remainder of the property, where the natural woods are inter-planted with many native trees and shrubs. Look for cucumber magnolia, yellow birch, black gum and swamp magnolia among others.
Directions: From East Hill Plaza, take Ellis Hollow Rd. east about 4.5 miles. At the stop sign, continue right on Ellis Hollow Rd about .75 miles. Turn left on Hurd Rd. The Squyres' residence is the first house on the right. Park on the side of the road.
