The Seventh Annual Green Building Seminar Series kicks off on Wednesday, March 2, with a presentation on important Energy-related Updates to the Building Codes, including Energy Star, by Mark Pierce and Billy Epthimiatos. Mark is an Extension Associate in Cornell University's Department of Design and Environmental Analysis who works in the Consumer Education Program for Residential Energy Efficiency, which educates homeowners throughout NY State through the Cooperative Extension System. Billy is a Senior Code Inspector with the City of Ithaca Building Department.
What was good enough just a few years ago simply isn't so any more. Come find out what the building codes require today, how energy efficiency has evolved as part of the codes, and how to achieve higher levels of energy efficiency in your projects.

The series continues for four more Wednesday evenings with seminars on the following topics (click on the title to go to the events page, with directions to the venue and a map):
- March 9. Energy Audits & Weatherization: what are they, what can you expect as a homeowner and contractor, and how can you become a certified auditor. Shawn Lindabury, Community Energy Educator, will be presenting with Dee Gamble, Green Jobs Coordinator (and BPI-certified Building Analyst and Envelope Professional), both with CCETC.
- March 16. All About Insulation. Bill Szabo will present a comparison of the various types, their characteristics, properties, performance, and costs. Szabo is the insulation manager at Halco. Among his many credentials, he is a BPI-certified Building Analyst and Shell Specialist, and mold-abatement, building science, and air sealing specialist.
- March 23. Note: postponed due to weather to Wednesday, April 6, same time and place. Apollonya Porcelli and e.j. George will give an introduction to the Local Building Materials Initiative, a Cooperative Extension program to catalog and promote building materials being manufactured within 100 miles of Ithaca. They will also discuss how to overcome some of the challenges of sourcing and working with local building materials. Porcelli heads the Initiative and George, a consultant, was one of the program's originators. Come see the first prototype of the this valuable resource, which will be available the night of the presentation.
- March 30. Affordable Green Building is the topic of our final seminar this season. Come learn all about green modular construction, recruiting and working with volunteers, and how to get the biggest bang for your buck and still be green from industry professionals Jack Jensen and Matt Haney. Jensen, the Executive Director of Community Building Works!, has more than 30 years experience in the affordable housing arena. He will be joined by Matt Haney, whose local company, Carina Construction, builds green modular homes.
- April 6. Local Building Materials Initiative (see March 23, above)
All seminars are Wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm at the First Unitarian Church of Ithaca Annex (208 E. Buffalo St., near Aurora). The Green Building Seminar Series is presented by Tompkins County Cooperative Extension and the Ithaca Green Building Alliance with support from the First Unitarian Church of Ithaca.
