All new parents could use a little support with breastfeeding!

Pre- and Post-natal Breastfeeding Support

Tina Snyder, one of our Nutrition Program Educators, is also a Certified Lactation Counselor. Tina is able to offer her regular in-person classes for new or expecting moms, and can provide Pre-Natal and Postnatal Breastfeeding Support by phone or other platforms for women who are WIC eligible (note: you do not need to be receiving WIC, just meet the WIC Eligibility Requirements). Just send Tina an email at tmf8@cornell.edu or text her at 607-280-0427 to schedule an appointment to talk.

Each of the following topics will be tailored to the mother’s specific needs, questions, and concerns.

  1. Health During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Mother's health is critical to the success of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  2. Breastfeeding is the Norm!: Knowing the importance of breastfeeding is the first step to making the choice to breastfeed.
  3. Breastfeeding Preparation: Understanding the biological processes that take place in mother and baby increases a mother’s confidence in breastfeeding.
  4. Positioning for Breastfeeding: Mother and baby each have a role in making breastfeeding a comfortable and successful experience.
  5. Breastfeeding the Baby: Understanding how to decode the infant hunger signals makes breastfeeding less stressful and more successful.
  6. Pumping and Storing Breastmilk: Pumping milk ahead of time and appropriate handling of the expressed milk is critical to breastfeeding success when mother will be away from baby.
  7. Confronting Barriers: Identifying individuals and community organizations is a proactive way to build a support system for breastfeeding.
  8. Breastfeeding in Public: Many mothers have concerns about breastfeeding in public, specifically modesty and legality of public breastfeeding. This helps prepare women to address these issues.
  9. Breastfeeding for Working Mothers: Open communication with employer about workplace policy and support for breastfeeding can help mothers continue to breastfeed after they return to work.
  10. Starting Baby on Solid Foods: Knowing, when, how and what to give to the infant can make feeding solid foods a safe and exciting milestone for the infant and parents.

Online Class?

Spending a lot of time alone as a new mom can sometimes feel isolating.  Would you be interested in meeting online with Tina and other moms to talk about these breastfeeding topics and share experiences?  If there is  interest, we can start a group of women who are WIC eligible to meet online via Zoom. Please text or email Tina at 607-280-0427 or 607-280-0427 to let her know you are interested!
