This year's Open Farm Day focuses on the west half of the county and features farms in Newfield, Trumansburg, Ulysses, and Ithaca. An exploration of the most ancient way of growing grapes for wine becomes a leap into the very deep rabbit hole of polyculture agroforestry and rethinking our relationships to the more than human community that makes wine possible. This is a walking tour of the farm. Learn the techniques, ecological principles, and low-cost, low-input ways of growing multi-story wine forests, which might make the worlds most delicious wine.Instructor's bio: Adam L. Huss recently moved to Spencer, NY to develop the Wineforest Farm as one of the first wine producing polycultures of its kind in the Americas. Adam is the host and producer of the Beyond Organic Wine podcast, has worked in vineyards and made wine commercially in California and Vermont, and ran a winery in Los Angeles for 7 years. He's the author of the book Wine Liberated: The Ecological Revolution and the Vintners Inspiring Change, releasing this November 2026 from Chelsea Green Publishing. Adam is the founder and co-producer of the Embracing Hybrid Grapes conference.

Carl Albers homestead planting, which also hosts a significant trial for the NY Nut Growers Association English Walnut Project, has grafted shagbark and shellbark hickories, apples, pears, plums, black locusts, and a vegetable garden. Carl is doing his best to foster early nut production through organic fertilization and other options for regenerative nut tree culture. You will learn about soil fertility, ways to improve soil drainage, and a regenerative approach to growing nut trees.Carl Albers is the current Vice President of the NY Nut Growers Association and is providing leadership for the NYNGA English Walnut Project (EWP.) He has degrees in botany, and plant and soil science, and worked as a crop specialist for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County for thirty years. The main focus of the EWP is to collect and trial under NYS growing conditions a diverse mix of Juglans regia individuals, both existing cultivars and seedling trees, for local adaptation and nut quality. Our goal is to find the best EW individuals we can and make them available to the public for home and potential commercial use.

Join us on a foraging walk to see what along our trails is edible! This walk will focus on mushrooms but discuss plants as well. The trail will be moderately flat over uneven terrain and we will cover around 1 mile, please wear proper footwear and bring water. Participants must be 18 years old or older. To learn about edible plants beforehand, check out our Plant Foraging lecture!Instructors' bio: Emma and Zack are co-founders of Maidenhair Mushrooms. Emma studied Mycology at SUNY ESF, and uses the lens of fungi to restore native ecosystems across the region as a Land Steward. She also has certificates in Bioregional Herbalism and Wild Mushroom Identification. Zack fell in love with fungi as a chef in a commercial kitchen, after being exposed to the wonderful world of wild foods. He is now an expert mushroom cultivator and hobby forest farmer. Together, they have over a decade of foraging experience, and are passionate about teaching these skills to others to build a more resilient community

In this presentation we will cover the essential features of syntropic agroforestry. What does syntropy mean, and how can we achieve it? We will discuss what is meant by the macro-organism, how ecological succession is used as a guiding principle, how forest stratification is treated, and the importance of pruning to drive the system. We will also look at examples of farms and how syntropic agroforestry has changed the land as well as ecological and economic productivity. We will only touch on design and management in an introductory way, but these will be expanded on in the second part of this series.Erik Schellenberg is the natural resource educator and commercial horticulture educator with CCE Orange County. He is also a student of Ernst Götsch, the creator of syntropic agroforestry and works to bring this way of approaching agriculture to North America.

Join us as we present the first-year results of exploring the above-business-as-usual maintenance costs of farming in a conservation-minded way. This first foray quantifies the differences in production expenses and profitability of the PES pilot farms compared to producers of a similar scale & type that utilize conventional farming practices across New York State. By identifying the outsized maintenance costs these farmers incur by farming in conservation-minded ways (thereby increasing ecosystem services), allows our research team to identify the Opportunity Cost of prioritizing management for things like soil health and water quality/quantity. This Opportunity Cost describes the combined unaccounted-for price of activities like: no-till field labor hours, or maintaining acreage as riparian buffers along streams instead of converting that into direct-production space. Identifying the factors involved will provide context for what scale of ecosystem service payment is necessary to address these above-business-as-usual costs.Please join us online as Dr. Becca Jablonski and Dr. Allison Bauman share the methods & approach developed by our research team, the initial findings from year one, and discuss the ways in which this work will be built upon in the coming year. Participants will learn about the safety, equipment, and benefits of preserving seasonal foods. The class will also include hands-on demos where participants will get to practice canning. New York State Parks is increasing the use of native plants in our shared public spaces, following a native plant policy that encourages using beneficial species in all landscaping and gardening projects. In this discussion we will go over management strategies that help horticulture staff balance aesthetic and ecological goals in landscape restoration and garden sites around the Finger Lakes state park region. The pros and cons of different planting and establishment strategies will also be discussed.Instructor's bio: Max McCune has been a Horticulturalist at New York State Parks since 2018, he works to design, maintain and manage native plant restorations and gardens throughout the Finger Lakes region. This 7-week workshop series is for parents and caregivers who want to learn additional tools to effectively support and raise their spirited child(ren). Learn how to understand your and your child's temperamental traits, identify clues leading up to challenging behaviors and tantrums, and develop strategies for reducing or eliminating power struggles. This class will meet on ZOOM for (7) Tuesdays, November 10 - December 22 from Noon - 1:30 pm.
