TCFTS is a countywide effort to enable schools in Tompkins County both to serve NY State farm-fresh products into their cafeterias and to raise student awareness of fresh farm foods! Each month cafeterias across the county, will serve two “Harvest of the Month” (HOM) dishes that highlight seasonal NY state fruit and vegetables throughout the 2019-2020 school year. For example, in September, cafeterias will serve Ratatouille that will highlight NY State summer squash, bell peppers, and eggplant. For September fruits, NY State plums and peaches will be served!
TCFTS aims to provide resources and support, to help SFAs reach the procurement benchmark of 30% NY State food to qualify for a 25-cent per meal reimbursement under the terms of the NYS No Student Hungry legislation . To do so, TCFTS has created a coordinated buying strategy across School Food Authorities (SFAs) and aims to trains food service workers and auxiliary staff in the preparation and serving of local foods and supports the effective use of local produce.
