Propagating Native Plants

  • Saturday, November 13, 2021, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

We had a fantastic zoom class in October regarding propagating native plants. Now it's time to get our hands dirty! The Plantsmen Nursery has invited us into their greenhouse for a Saturday Morning Hands-On Workshop. All attendees will go home with sown seeds, ready for stratification or planting. Since this is an in-person class, we require vaccination and mask wearing. We will be working in a well-ventilated greenhouse, so please dress appropriately for the outside temperature. Space is strictly limited to 18 students per class! Online registration required.

Our Instructors and hosts are Dan Segal, owner of The Plantsmen nursery and Bridget Gaines, Horticulture and Nursery Director at The Plantsment. Dan has worked with native plants for over 20 years, in California, the Mid-Atlantic, and New York. His areas of expertise include ecological restoration, residential landscaping, plant propagation, plant bio-geography, and the study of native plant communities. His experience collecting and propagating over 1000 species of plants is a big part of what makes The Plantsmen Nursery unique among other nurseries and landscape companies. Bridget's warm passion for plants is impossible to miss, and has been cultivated with over 20 years of experience in various facets of horticulture: horticulture therapy, retail/wholesale nurseries, landscape installation and design, garden maintenance, organic vegetable farming, medicinal plants and flower design. She received her B.S. from Virginia Tech in horticulture therapy and has developed her managerial skills over the past decade.

About the Make More Plants! Series The world is abundant if we acknowledge the rhythms of nature and tap into how our favorite plants prefer to reproduce. This new class series will teach you the science and the skills to multiply the plants in your garden and share plants with family, friends, and neighbors. Each class will cover a different kind of propagation technique or will cover particular plants. From growing simple seeds to complex grafting, please join us to learn how to be part of the abundance of nature.

We are committed to making all the Zoom classes in our Horticulture Program financially accessible, so have moved to a pay-what-you-can model. Our Zoom classes are valued at $20. If you can afford to pay $20 or more, you are helping make these classes available to folks who cannot afford the full price. All registrants, regardless of payment level, will receive a video recording of the class. Because of limited physical space in our in-person classes, we cannot offer unlimited free spaces, but we do have a few scholarship spots available. Simply reach out to us at the contact info below to claim one of those spots.

Class size is limited to 18 participants.  There is a sliding scale fee of $15-$40, for this class.
Due to class size we are only able to offer only 3 scholarships.
