Help promote responsible composting in Tompkins County as a Master Composter volunteer!
The free training includes ten 2-hour classes (20 hours) and two field trips. In between weekly classes, trainees spend an average of 2 hours working on class projects and volunteering. After training, Master Composters give back to the community through a variety of outreach activities.
The 2026 Master Composter volunteer training will be held every Thursday evening, 6:00 to 8:00pm, from February 12 to April 30, 2026. To accommodate school breaks, class will not be held on March 19 or April 2. Classes will be held in person unless it becomes necessary to hold a class via Zoom. Unless otherwise noted, in-person classes will be held at CCETC, 615 Willow Ave in Ithaca.
In addition to weekly classes, two field trips will be scheduled during the training period..The Compost Fair will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Specifics about the volunteer work in between classes (called the "practical internship") can be found in the Volunteer Job Description and will be discussed during applicant interviews.
