Before you start preserving food this summer, be sure to test your pressure canner gauge! On Saturday May 20, CCE Nutrition staff Aly Trombitas & Tina Snyder will be at the Ithaca Farmers Market from 9am-12pm offering pressure canning gauge testing. This is an opportunity for home canners to ensure that their pressure canning gauge is working correctly, which is important both for food quality and food safety. Anyone is also invited to stop by to learn a bit more about home food preservation.
Why test your canner’s gauge?
Pressure gauges should be tested annually for accuracy and safety. Inaccurate gauge readings can lead to food safety risks, damaged equipment and other problems. The USDA recommends dial gauges be replaced if they read high or low by more than two pounds at 5, 10 or 15 pounds of pressure. Having Cooperative Extension test your pressure canner gauge is the easiest way to learn if your gauge is accurate.
Getting your gauge tested is easy!
The entire process takes 10 minutes and you only need to bring the gauge itself, not your whole canner.
Start your summer off right by testing your pressure canner gauge. Don’t wait — have your gauge tested now and save money, save time, and keep your family safe.
