If you have home solar, community solar, or any type of net metering agreement with NYSEG, you will be prevented from signing up for the Smart Usage Plan. Many people with home or community solar are locked into a good deal already when they are reimbursed for the energy their solar panels deliver to the grid. Opting into the Smart Usage Plan would permanently change that net metering agreement with NYSEG, placing customers into a new agreement (called VDER) that is less advantageous. To limit confusion around this issue, NYSEG has prevented customers with net metering agreements from signing up for the Smart Usage Plan. Please see the ESC-Solar FAQ page, and contact Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County to talk to an Energy Educator if you would like to know more about this.
