Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed our babies, but it isn't always easy to get started. Most moms need some help at first. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County can offer the popular series "Breastfeeding for the Health of It!" to interested groups. We also suggest the following resources to new or expectant families:
Mothers & Babies Perinatal Network of South Central NY
Lactation Alliance for Tompkins County Health (LATCH) comprises breastfeeding helpers from Public Health, WIC, Cornell Co-Operative Extension, Cayuga Medical Center, BirthNet of the Fingerlakes and local medical offices, midwives, doulas, IBCLC private practices, and La Leche League. Reach out to Tina Snyder (contact info below) for more information.
Moms PLUS +is a program of the Tompkins County Health Department. Maternal-child health nurses at TCHD are all certified lactation counselors. They can assist with breast/chestfeeding and other postpartum needs via home visits. Free for all Tompkins County residents.
WIC is federal program that provides food vouchers, nutrition support, and peer counseling for people who are pregnant or post-partum, and their children through age five. Breastfeeding support is available. WIC for Tompkins County is offered through the Tompkins County Health Department.
