The Hillman Gardens, on a 14-acre property in Ellis Hollow, have been in the making since 1964. There were no trees or scrubs except for 100-year-old hardwoods in hedgerows dividing the horse pastures and stream bed. An old board wood fence and four pallets of stone set off the 100-foot flower bed that looks onto the pastures. Old brick is used for walkways, a patio and the floor of the 14’x15’ Lord and Burnham cathedral ceiling heated greenhouse. The vine-covered Pergola offers more views of the lawns, stream and 1 1/2 acre pond and shade garden. A koi pool, stream path and shade garden path offer perennial and natural interest. Included also are vegetable gardens, an orchard and usually 80 dahlias.
NOTE: This garden was featured on an Open Days Garden Tour and is not open to the public at other times.
